Support is growing amongst other local elected officials for Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed "City of Yes" zoning changes to spur new construction, with Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine (D) holding pro-housing rallies and speaking up for new housing ideas on his social media. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso (D) and City Council Member Erik Bottcher (D-West Village, West Midtown) are "forming a 'housing league' of elected officials to push a pro-development agenda backing a litany of changes that will produce more housing in the city," reported The City. "Historically administrations have proposed changes with the support of big business and real estate groups but have had to navigate and cajole elected leaders who thought their best approach was to appeal to anti-development voters by demanding each proposal be downsized."
Meanwhile, on the Left, "a new group — calling itself 'Homes Now, Homes for Generations' — will push for making the sizable capital commitment to build or repair 10,000 units in the Fiscal Year 2025 city budget, which must be adopted by a June 30 deadline," reported AM New York. "The alliance includes members of the City Council’s Progressive Caucus, City Comptroller Brad Lander (D) and Public AdvocateJumaane Williams (D), and reps for several housing nonprofit and advocacy groups.”
