"What's currently a state-owned eyesore in East Farmingdale will be transformed into new affordable housing units," WCBS-2 said. "Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that a 13-acre site at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale has been earmarked for a major redevelopment that will include affordable housing, open space and 'other community amenities.,'" reported WNBC-4. "The exact number of housing units is not yet clear, but an estimated 20% of the development will be established for affordable housing."
Newsday's Editorial Board praised this project as an example of what can be done to solve the housing crisis throttling Long Island's economy: "The pieces appear to be in place. The state is contributing its land, the federal government is committing up to $4 million for additional environmental cleanup, and county and town elected officials are taking a bipartisan, cooperative approach. Responses to an Empire State Development request for proposals to develop the property are due in August."
