Assembly District 18 (Hempstead Village, Uniondale, NE Freeport): While absentee ballots remain to be counted next week, Lisa Ortiz, president of the Lakeview Library Board, trails Hempstead Village Trustee Noah Burroughs by just 171 votes - for a current margin of 52-48%. Burroughs will in all likelihood be the new Assemblymember in this landslide Democratic district, replacing 3 terms of Taylor Darling (D).
Assembly District 21 (Lynbrook, Baldwin, SW Freeport): Former 2-term Assemblymember Judy Griffin of Rockville Centre easily defeated Patricia Maher of Baldwin with 80% of the vote. Griffin will be the Democratic nominee in her third match with current Assemblymember Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook). Griffin defeated Curran 53-47% in 2018, but Curran defeated Griffin by 0.1% in 2022. This race is a toss-up in November.
Assembly District 4 (Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Coram): By 64-36%, Port Jefferson Village Trustee Rebecca Kassay easily defeated Skyler Johnson, a non-profit director from Port Jefferson Station, in the primary to decide who will face Assemblymember Ed Flood (R). Flood defeated 10-term Assemblymember Steve Englebright (D) 51-49% in 2022 and the district will be close again this November. Afterall, Englebright was elected to represent this same area in the Suffolk County Legislature just last year and backed Kassay.
