On July 30, 2024, dedicated members of Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR) joined forces to repaint and plant flowers at the 46th and 5th Street Seat located in the heart of Long Island City. This vibrant spot was initially created in 2021 by LIBOR in collaboration with Street Plans, Rockaway Brewing Company, and the NYC Department of Transportation. The project was made possible through the National Association of REALTORS®’ (NAR) Placemaking grant.
The parklet, adjacent to Rockaway Brewing Company, was designed as an innovative solution for safe social distancing during the pandemic. Since its inception, it has become a beloved gathering place for residents, visitors, and patrons of the community. With chairs, tables, and benches framing the space, and a street mural that blends seamlessly with the eclectic surroundings, the 46th and 5th Street Seat has become a lively and welcoming spot in Long Island City.
LIBOR’s team of volunteers worked alongside the staff at Rockaway Brewing Company, who have graciously volunteered to be the liability partner for the project and have maintained the space for the enjoyment of the public and their patrons.
Long Island City is a bustling neighborhood known for its hundreds of restaurants, shops, galleries, and event venues. The location of the 46th and 5th Street Seat was chosen purposefully to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of individuals who patronize local businesses, providing a safe and inviting place to rest, meet up, eat, and enjoy the community.
This beautification project marks the final event of LIBOR’s REALTOR® Volunteer Days, a nationwide initiative where REALTORS® give back to their communities. In June, LIBOR partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island (HFHLI) and Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) to help build and repair homes within local neighborhoods. REALTOR® Volunteer Days are part of the REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors program, which celebrates members who make an extraordinary commitment to their communities through volunteer work.
"Community is at the heart of real estate, which is why REALTORS® volunteer at twice the rate of the general population," said LIBOR President Kevin Leatherman. "We are incredibly proud of our members who go above and beyond helping consumers buy and sell homes. At LIBOR, we are committed to creating better, more vibrant communities, and volunteerism is central to that mission. Our REALTORS® are dedicated to making a lasting impact, ensuring that our neighborhoods are wonderful places to live, work, and thrive."
The 46th and 5th Street Seat, located at the corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street in Long Island City, is accessible to all and remains open year-round. For more information on LIBOR’s community initiatives, visit www.lirealtor.com/news/pr-campaign.
