Congress 2024: Gillen Defeats D'Esposito; Other House Incumbents Reelected

Nov 6, 2024

Despite Vice President Kamala Harris' historically poor performance across New York State, election returns also showed that New York Democrats appeared to defeat 3 Republican incumbents in their quest to take back the US House of Representatives:

State Sen. John Mannion (D) defeated US Rep. Brandon Williams (R) of the Syracuse and Utica area; 2022 nominee Josh Riley bested US Rep. Marc Molinaro (R) to represent Ithaca, Binghamton, and suburban Albany; and former Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen (D) was up by 6,000 votes in her rematch against US Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R).

All other local members of Congress were reelected: US Rep. Nick LaLota (R) won reelection by about 10 points over John Avlon (D) to represent the North Shore and East End of Suffolk; US Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R) won by double-digits over Rob Lubin (R) to represent the Towns of Babylon, Islip, and southern Brookhaven; and US Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) won a surprisingly single-digit race over former State Assemblymember Mike LiPetri (R) to represent northeast Queens, North Hempstead, parts of Huntington, and most of Oyster Bay.

In Queens, US Reps. Gregory Meeks (D-Jamaica, Rockaways), Grace Meng (D-Flushing, Forest Hills), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Astoria, Elmhurst), and Nydia Velázquez (D-Long Island City, Ridgewood) all won their barely contested reelections with at least 60% of the vote.
