NYC 2025: 2 Unions Back Brannan for Comptroller; Queens Split on Public Advocate

Feb 5, 2025

"Outgoing Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan (D-Bay Ridge) has netted endorsements for his city comptroller bid from two key New York unions — becoming the first candidate in the competitive race to lock in major labor support," reported the Daily News. "The endorsements from the Transport Workers Union and Teamsters Local 831, which represents rank-and-file employees of the city Department of Sanitation, are being rolled out after Brannan officially kicked off his campaign late last month, having raised money for it over the past five months."

Brannan faces Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine (D) on the June 24 primary ballot. There is no Republican candidate.

Meanwhile, the Public Advocate race is heating up. After changing races from City Comptroller, Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar (D-Woodhaven) has earned the backing of State Senator Joseph Addabo (D-Woodhaven) and several fellow Queens Assembly members in her primary challenge to incumbent Jumaane Williams (D). Williams touted a long list of Queens endorsements of his own in response, including Borough President Donovan Richards (D), City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D-Jamaica), and longtime State Senators Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) and Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans).
