NYC Mayor 2025: Petitions Begin, Awaiting Undeclared Cuomo and Adrienne Adams

Feb 26, 2025

As petitioning to get on the ballot gets underway, and still-indicted Mayor Eric Adams continues to skip candidate forums (while claiming he's still running), the two biggest questions left in the 2025 mayoral race are what a pair of politicians with Queens roots plan to do next.

As we shared before, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo leads all early polling (in the mid-30s) but also has high negative ratings amongst NYC voters and there may be some limits on Cuomo's use of the $8M still in his state election campaign account. But with a super PAC formed to support his expected future announcement and new endorsements from both the New York City District Council of Carpenters and US Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-Riverdale, S. Bronx), Cuomo would be the instant frontrunner.

While Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (no relation to Mayor Eric Adams) has previously not been ambitious for higher office and does not have major name recognition outside of political circles, that could change quickly if several major unions and statewide officials like Attorney General Tish James throw their support behind her potential "no more drama" bid.

All candidates in the Democratic primary must gather at least 3,750 valid voter signatures between now and April 3 to make the ballot. NY1 explained while teasing the potential downsides awaiting Cuomo. The primary will be June 24.
