DOGE: Advocates Sound Alarm as LIHC, NYC Groups Face Funding Cuts

Mar 12, 2025

"Federal spending cuts are targeting nonprofits that combat housing discrimination, slashing funding for watchdogs that investigate complaints and enforce fair housing laws. Long Island's only local nonprofit dedicated to investigating housing discrimination said it has lost $1 million in funding over the next three years after the Trump administration terminated its federal contract as part of a nationwide slashing of federal spending," reported Newsday.

"More than a dozen Democratic members of Congress who represent New York sent a letter to HUD Secretary Scott Turner Sunday decrying what they described as 'staff purges' at the agency’s local offices, including one in lower Manhattan that reportedly has just one 'Field Policy and Management employee,' left," reported City News.

"We have been informed that our constituents seeking help in person at local field offices will likely be turned away because reduced staff cannot adequately serve all those who need it," reads the joint letter signed by a diverse array of federal lawmakers representing New York, including US Reps. Dan Goldman (D-Lower Manhattan, Sunset Park), Gregory Meeks (D-Jamaica, Rockaways), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Astoria, Parkchester), Grace Meng (D-Flushing, Forest Hills) Tom Suozzi (D-Bayside, Glen Cove), and Ritchie Torres (D-Riverdale, South Bronx)
