HUD: Trump Admin. Backs New Housing, But DOGE Cuts Hit Home

Apr 1, 2025

"U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner shared an idea jointly formulated with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum that will tap into the potential of underutilized federal lands to increase the supply of affordable housing and alleviate the longstanding burden on the market," reported Fox News.

"HUD will pinpoint where housing needs are most pressing and guide the process by working with state and local leaders who know their communities best. Interior will identify locations that can support homes while carefully considering environmental impact and land-use restrictions," the two Cabinet members wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

But locally, "Long Island Housing Services, a local fair housing watchdog, said Wednesday it has greater assurance it will get paid for its work following a federal court order that requires the Trump administration to restore funding to nonprofits that combat housing discrimination," reported Newsday.

"The order affects grants to two nonprofits... Long Island Housing Services in Bohemia and Fair Housing Justice Center in Long Island City, Queens. Earlier this month, Long Island Housing Services told Newsday that the canceled grants represent about $1 million over the next 2 ½ years. The grants allow the nonprofits to field discrimination complaints, conduct investigations, and provide educational programs about fair housing laws to groups, such as landlords and real estate agents."
