NYC Mayor 2025: New Endorsements Announced, But Will Adams Run Independent?

Apr 1, 2025

In a press conference in which he slammed former Governor Andrew Cuomo for dodging questions over COVID in nursing homes, bail reform, and the housing crisis, current Mayor Eric Adams suggested he would not be filing a Democratic primary petition this week.

This fueled ongoing speculation Adams would instead run as an independent in November against whomever wins the Democratic primary, as well as likely Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

More endorsements came down this past week in the New York City Democratic primary:

  • Early frontrunner and former Governor Cuomo was backed by Queens Democratic Party leader and U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks (Southeast Queens), State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (NE Queens), State Sen. Joe Addabbo (SW Queens), Assembly Member David Weprin (Jamaica Estates), Assembly Member Ed Braunstein (Bayside), and NYC Council Member Lynn Schulman (Forest Hills).
  • State Senator James Sanders (SE Queens) said he would rank Cuomo first, with City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams second on his ranked-choice ballot.
  • "The Working Families Party voted late Saturday to endorse a slate of four Democrats —Adrienne Adams, Brad Lander, Zohran Mamdani and Zellnor Myrie — in the ranked-choice primary for New York City mayor," reported WNYC's Gothamist. WFP did not rank those choices yet, but expects to later as the June 24 Primary Day approaches.
