The surprise move by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin (R) to end his reelection campaign and become a judge means the top job in America's largest township could be a hot contest this November.
"On Thursday, the Nassau Republican party announced its nominee, Legislator John Ferretti (R-Levittown), at a press event in Westbury. The four-term lawmaker said it was a 'dream come true' and touted his record of keeping taxes in check, fighting antisemitism, protecting women in sports, and supporting law enforcement," reported News 12. Ferretti is an attorney with many years in Nassau County government.
"The Nassau Democratic Party announced their nominee earlier this week, Joseph Scianablo, of Garden City. He's a Marine veteran, a former NYPD police officer, and a prosecutor. Scianablo says public safety and infrastructure improvements are top priorities, as well as lowering taxes for the Hempstead residents." Scianablo is also a REALTOR®.
The recent 12.1% tax increase passed by outgoing Supervisor Don Clavin (R) and the Republican-dominated Town Council is expected to be a key issue in the campaign. There has only been one Democratic candidate to win Hempstead Town Supervisor in the last century: newly-elected US Congressmember Laura Gillen (D-Town of Hempstead, Long Beach).
