NYC Poll: 88% Want More Affordable Housing; Cuomo Leads, Mamdani Surges

Apr 15, 2025

In a poll commissioned by AARP, Siena finds that only 21% of New York City voters think America's largest municipality is on the right track, with a whopping 68% saying a lack of affordable housing is "a very serious problem" and another 20% calling it "a somewhat serious problem." A majority of every single demographic agreed, regardless of age, race, religion, borough, or politics - including Republicans.

Siena's poll of New York City Democratic primary voters found some movement beneath the surface:

  • While former Governor Andrew Cuomo remains in the lead at the same 34% he's held for some time, State Assemblymember and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani of Astoria surged firmly into second place with 16%.
  • Late entrant City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams of South Queens seemed to benefit from current Mayor Eric Adams' departure from the primary. The second choice of Black voters behind Cuomo, she is now tied for third with City Comptroller Brad Lander and former City Comptroller Scott Stringer at 6% each.
  • While the election is still two months away, if today were Primary Day, Cuomo would be the likely winner: "After six candidates were eliminated in the ranked-choice voting system, Cuomo would win the election in the eighth round of counting with 54% of the vote," reported AM New York.
