LIBOR helping to save lives one step at a time

Oct 22, 2018

Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer, in some way. Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the US (excluding skin cancer) and is second only lung cancer, as a cause of cancer death in women.

Twenty-five years ago, 2,500 Long Islanders took action and walked at Long Island’s first ever Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event hosted at Eisenhower Park. Because of the passion and importance of this topic in particular, Long Island’s walk quickly grew to become the largest Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in the country.

On Sunday, October 21, 2018, LIBOR had the distinct honor of sponsoring the 25th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach. Our REALTOR® participants were among the 65,000 walkers who collectively raised $2,536,000.00.  The millions of dollars raised will directly fund lifesaving research, promote education, early detection, as well as provide comprehensive patient support for those in need of it.

2018 LIBOR President Charlotte Van der Waag, who attended the walk event, was overwhelmed by the positive energy of the day.  “The 25th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk was a tremendous celebration of life recognition and remembrance of loved-ones-lost. To be surrounded by so many people with the same goal in mind – to walk for a cure- was awe-inspiring; and left us all full of hope for the future.” said Van der Waag.

LIBOR was also a sponsor of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Eastern Long Island Walk on October 28, 2018 at Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus, which raised $107,000 to help support those facing breast cancer.

LIBOR is proud to celebrate twenty-five years of progress in work towards defeating this disease and joining in Making Strides mission to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

This sponsorship was made through LIBOR’s Public Relations campaign “We’re More than REALTORS®…” (WMTR).  Created by LIBOR’s Public Relations Committee in 2006, the WMTR campaign supports numerous organizations, philanthropic programs and charitable community efforts across Long Island and throughout the world.
